Having a healthy brain isn’t always a given – especially for seniors. With over 7 million Americans each year having Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, it’s important to be proactive. Just like a healthy body, there are actions you can take that will help keep your mind sharp. Here are 10 great ways.
- Get Enough Sleep – Studies have proven that most people need about 7 hours of quality sleep each night. While you’re asleep, your brain gets right to work, repairing and cleaning out any toxins. By not having enough rest, researchers have found that “extensive wakefulness” can cause permanent damage to neurons, which are responsible for cognition and alertness.
- Eat Healthy – Keeping a healthy “brain diet” means staying away from too much sugar, processed foods and simple carbs – like candy, syrups and soda. Try eating lots of non-GMO, mineral-rich organic vegetables and fresh fruits. If you eat meat, keep it hormone-free and grass-fed. Eat in moderation – red meat in particular – because it can certain form of iron that have been linked to cognitive decline.
- Consume Healthy Fats – It’s important to consume healthy fats on a regular basis. Omega-3 fatty acids in particular – found in organic, cold-pressed olive oil, avocado oil, salmon, flaxseed oil, and flaxseed oil. Studies have shown that consuming these foods can support speaking ability, memory function, and motor skills.
- Exercise – Getting moderate quantities of exercise of good for your immune system, as well as your cardiovascular system. - Meditate – Decades of studies have shown that meditating has a healthy connection with mental health. It will decrease any signs of stress, disease and depression. - Keep Learning – Keep your brain sharp by using it every day. Try a crossword puzzle or other games like Scrabble or Sudoku. Learn a new language, read a book or learn how to play an instrument. By practicing using all your senses on a regular basis, will activate different parts of your brain.
- Spend Time In Nature – Researcher explained that forest trees emit healing substances called phytocides, which can ease anxiety, lower cortisol levels and promote healthy sleep. If you’re not into walking through the woods, gardening can have the same effect. If it’s the middle of winter, try using the aroma of tree oils such as pine, spruce or eucalyptus around your home.
