Great Activities for Seniors with Limited Mobility

October 19, 2019 by sharon

Many older adults can lose mobility due to conditions such as arthritis, balance issues or stroke. Hobbies and activities that they used to enjoy may now be too difficult. Just because your elderly loved one isn’t as mobile as they once were, doesn’t mean they can’t still have fun.

Here are 5 fun activities for older adults with limited mobility.

  • Spend time Reading

Reading is a great way to keep the brain engaged. It can also help reduce stress, improve memory and delay cognitive decline. There are many different types of reading material – such as a physical book, e-book, magazine or audiobook.

  • Variety of Hobbies

There are many activities that don’t require much mobility. Some include knitting, gardening, playing a musical instrument or baking. There are also many hobbies that your loved one can try for the first time and learn something new.

  • Physically Active

Exercising regularly is especially important for those with limited mobility. They can keep their bodies moving through chair exercises or chair yoga routines. While sitting, your loved ones can life their arms and legs and make circle motions to keep the blood circulating.

  • Creative Activities

A great way to keep seniors active is by tuning into their creative side. Painting, drawing, coloring or sculpting are all great ways to pass the time in a creative way. Research also found that being creative can help people who battle chronic illnesses and reduce stress and activity.

  • Game Time

While watching TV all day isn’t a healthy pastime, watching an educational documentary or learning about an interest, such as a cooking show or travel show, can be more enjoyable and fun. Sing along with your loved one to an old movie classic – music has the power to reduce anxiety, pain and even reduce stress.

While having limited mobility can sometimes be depressing for your older loved one, giving them opportunities to be creative and active will give them a sense of positivity and wellbeing.
